The 6dF Galaxy Survey
The 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) 1 is a spectroscopic survey of the entire southern sky with |b| > 10◦, based on the 2MASS near infrared galaxy catalog. It is conducted with the 6dF multi-fiber spectrograph attached to the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope. The survey will produce redshifts for some 170,000 galaxies, and peculiar velocities for about 15,000 and is expected to be complete by June 2005.
متن کاملSecond Data Release of the 6dF Galaxy Survey
The 6dF Galaxy Survey is measuring around 150 000 redshifts and 15 000 peculiar velocities from galaxies over the southern sky at | b | > 10◦. When complete, it will be the largest survey of its kind by more than an order of magnitude. Here we describe the characteristics of the Second Incremental Data Release (DR2) and provide an update of the survey. This follows earlier data made public in D...
متن کاملThe Tiling Algorithm for the 6dF Galaxy Survey
The Six Degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) is a spectroscopic survey of the southern sky, which aims to provide positions and velocities of galaxies in the nearby Universe. When completed the survey will produce approximately 170000 redshifts and 15000 peculiar velocities. The survey is being carried out on the Anglo Australian Observatory’s (AAO) UK Schmidt telescope, using the 6dF robotic fib...
متن کاملThe effects of stellar populations on galaxy scaling relations in the 6dF Galaxy Survey
We present an analysis of the stellar populations as a function of mass in a sample of ∼7000 galaxies of all morphological and emission types from the 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS). We measure velocity dispersions and Lick indices from the spectra of the central regions of these galaxies, deriving ages and metallicities from the Lick indices using stellar population models. We also derive dynamical...
متن کاملEnvironmental Dependence of the Fundamental Plane of Galaxy Clusters.
Galaxy clusters approximate a planar distribution in a three-dimensional parameter space that can be characterized, for example, by an optical luminosity, half-light radius, and X-ray luminosity. We find the nearest neighbor clusters for those common to either of two previous fundamental-plane studies and a high-quality cluster redshift catalog. Examining scatter about one plane in parameter sp...
